HISTORY

The Engineers Society of Pennsylvania was originally founded on March 31, 1904 under the name of Engineers Club of Central Pennsylvania, and was incorporated as a Non-profit Corporation under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on February 5, 1906. On December 2, 1909, the Dauphin County Courts granted a petition to change the Corporate name to Engineers Society of Pennsylvania. The annual membership dues were originally set at six dollars

The early years of the Society brought great growth as membership grew from a small group of charter members to 756 members in 1908. During this period the Society was headquartered in Harrisburg at locations on Walnut Street and Market Street and eventually purchased the Bailey Mansion at Front and Chestnut Streets. Here the Soctiey offered eight bedrooms for rent and maintained a staff of eight or nine including a chef, steward, maids, and porters, as well as board members. Eventually the annual dues were increased to $24.

The Society continued to function until late 1927, at which time the Society was disbanded. The Society Charter was retained by Dr. F. Herbert Snow, one of the founding members and in 1930, under his leadership, efforts were started to reorganize the Society. Reorganization was completed and the Society began to function again on February 13, 1931, and has continued to operate on a regular basis since that time.

As stated in the Constitution, the mission of the Society is the advancement of Science and Engineering. The Society serves the Engineering community and community at large through it’s activities, and welcomes members associated with all disciplines of engineering, in both public and private sectors. Over the years, the Society has grown to its current membership of nearly 300 members.

The Society is self-supporting, using the $20 annual dues to provide for program activities, publications, newsletters, and other miscellaneous expenses. Society functions are offered to the membership at cost or free of charge. The membership has NEVER been called upon for any additional contributions or assessments.
